Adobe Photoshop Lightroom was designed from the ground up with digital photographers in mind, offering powerful editing features in a streamlined interface that lets photographers import, sort, and organize images. As an established commercial and fashion photographer, Martin knows firsthand what photographers need for an efficient workflow.

He has been working with Lightroom from the beginning, monitoring the product’s development and providing valued feedback to Adobe. As a result, Martin knows the software inside and out, from image selection to image editing and image management. Generally his books are the best comprehensive overviews of the Adobe software.

However, I have two reservations. The first is the bad side of comprehensive. This book is very detailed not only on the use of the programs but on what I might call meta-issues — how and why the various manipulations work. Because of all the detail and the huge size this book is not suitable as a get-started or how to do X introduction.

His Lightroom Transformations is much better suited to that. Or any of Scott Kelby’s books which tend to have the opposite problem — not enough detail on important procedures and too much emphasis on how to do specific tasks. If you’re a relative novice, it’s likely to be a waste of money. As a reference book it’s unsurpassed. The second problem is much more minor but more irritating. There is a long index, but if you don’t know the exact name of what you’re looking for, your search will likely be frustrated.

However recently I wanted to practice with what I recalled was the little dot you placed in parts of scene to manipulate exposure and other details. The technical term is Target Adjustment Tool. Now if you don’t know the name how are you supposed to look it up? Oh, just go to the part of the book that deals with exposure adjustments. Easy enough to find that. Well the TAT is mentioned, but at least in that part of the book never defined; nor is there a good introduction on what it is or how to access it.

In a way this is an unfair criticism. As I well know from experience, indexing a book is tedious, boring, unfulfilling, and just plain hard. Professional indexers which I’m sure the author used are sometimes better, but unless they understand the likely fumbling around of the average user, they often miss important hints. And just for comparison Kelby discussed 15 ways well, an exaggeration of how to adjust exposure while only briefly mentioning the TAT, buried in a general paragraph.

Anyway Evening has my sympathy, but that doesn’t do much for the frustration. That said, it’s important to remember that this is an endemic problem. So highly recommended provided you understand your needs and whether this book is likely to meet them. Five stars for doing well what it is intended to do. But it won’t be 5 stars if you have different needs. I bought this book both in paper back and in Kindle format purposely.

I have bought many books by Evening and have found them to be quite complete and authoritative. The subject matter is surprisingly complex in a many areas. While the book is beyond other books in detail and very thorough, it is not flawless.

I would mark the book in both formats down to a 4. Once more, I feel he doesn’t flag Adobe faults both in code or help documentation. As an example, you are given the impression in the book and by Adobe that one can search for text in searchable metadata fields what fields are these? I would also recomend Lightroom. Lightroom is so beautiful, if you take more than a few photos. Martin Evening has written a first-rate book about Lightroom. It is clear, comprehensive, and well-written. I was anxious to get started with the program when it was released and so I purchased this book and also one by Scott Kelby. Kelby’s book is generally good and I found it somewhat useful in a few instances to read the two together, but Evening has written the better book and it stands alone very nicely.

Martin Evening’s books are very thorough, and this is no exception. He goes through each aspect of Adobe Lightroom in great detail, so much so, that it takes great concentration to stay with it for any length of time. Like many others, I ordered this huide because it was one of the first one’s out; I’ve now ordered Scott Kelby’s book and it will be interesting to compare them.

Aside from the content of the book there is one aspect of it makes it very difficult for me to use. This apple software for 10 the fact that all of the screen shot illustrations are so excruciatingly small that I must use a magnifying glass to examine them carefully, even under a very adequate light.

This is thf a criticism of Mr. Evening, but of his publisher, Adobe Press. As a book designer, I can say that trying to use illustrations that are not completely legible is bad practice. Martin Evening is a photographer and the author of a very popular Photoshop manual one that has been updated and enlarged with every new version of PS.

Lightorom he is part of the Adobe test team for PS, it seems logical that he has been tapped to write one of the first books on Lightroom. The book itself is very good, covering Lighroom in detail note that Lightroo, is feature-rich, but nothing like PS. And the book is recommended with a caveat. And that’s the bad news. Shortly after LR was released, Adobe released v1.

Other features were also added to LR. The bad news is mitigated by the fact that the publisher Peachpit Press is going to phitographers a pdf of a page update!
